It is our hope that you will be able to effortlessly and with ease pack all your belongings once you have finished reading this article. So, without further adieu here are 5 things you need to do, to make packing your belongings a piece of cake.

Streamline the Packing Process, tip #1: decluttering

The less you have to pack, the better. Getting rid of the things you don’t need will improve the quality of your move tremendously. Not only will you have fewer items to pack, but also the movers will have fewer items to transport. And given the fact, that most moving companies charge you by the weight of your belongings, decluttering can also save you a few bucks along the way. So, you should try to pinch yourself every time you say “should I keep this just in case?” to yourself. This should be a sign that you actually don’t use that item all that often, and should reconsider getting rid of it.

So how do you actually declutter? What is the best way? What do you recommend? Well, we are glad you asked.

Decluttering methods 101

There are a lot of decluttering methods out there. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend the “best” one. For the simple fact that there is no such method out there. The best system is the one that works for you. It can be the KonMari method, the Minimalist method, or an amalgamation of several different methods. You should pick and choose the system that works best for you. Since at the end of the day it is the fate of your belongings that you are deciding, so you should feel comfortable with the process you are using to get rid of those things.

Streamline the Packing Process, tip #2: familiarize yourself with packing those specialty items.

After you have decluttered your items, and before you start packing we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the best ways to pack each belonging. Since, as you might imagine, a different methodology is required for moving your piano and moving and packing your furniture. So make sure to read all about the ways in which to pack each specific household items, so that you feel comfortable packing each and every one of them.

  • recommendation: if you have specialty items (such as glassware) make sure you order specific packing kits. They speed up the packing process and ensure that your items will arrive home safely without a scratch.

Before buying packing supplies, make sure you use a packing calculator!

There are a lot of good (and bad) things that came from the fruition of the internet. It has allowed us to live a more comfortable, easy, a more… on-demand type of life. So, you should definitely use that to your advantage. Before you start searching for packing supplies NYC, we recommend that you find a good online packing calculator. These things are amazing! You input a few facts, like how many bedrooms you have, what type of lifestyle you live, how many people live in the house, etc and then it generates exactly how much packing supplies you are going to need! All the guesswork is eliminated! This solves all hypothesizing that people used to do before the internet was a thing. And did we mention the best part? They are free!

Tip #4: Create a moving index

The final tip before you start packing is to create a system that will allow you to track all your moving boxes. The worst nightmare you can have is to arrive after a long day of relocation and not know where you stored your phone charger and toothpaste. That’s why we recommend that you create a labeling system that will allow you to know exactly what is in each moving box.

  • recommendation: while there are several moving index systems out there, we found that just the diligence of writing the labels on moving boxes does wonders.

Tip #5: Pack room-by-room

After all that ground-work all that is left for you to do is get to work and start packing. Pick a room and don’t stop until all the belongings from that room are packed. This will make you more focused, and give you a sense of progression as you go on. Also, at the cost of boring you, we are going to mention this again. Don’t forget to label the moving boxes as you go!
